Ben Murray Bruce tackles El-Rufai on Jonathan’s rail project

The Senator representing Bayelsa east, Senator Ben Murray Bruce and the Governor of Kaduna state Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai have locked horns over who should be given credit for the Abuja-Kaduna railway where recently P3resident Muhammadu Buhari commissioned ten new coaches and two locomotives.

Senator Ben Murray Bruce on his Twitter handle had said that the project was a product of the Jonathan administration, but Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai schooled him on how the project came into being saying that ‘the Obasanjo administration, which Jonathan was not part of, designed, raised the financing and started the EPC of the Lagos-Kano dual track-standard gauge rail system, and the Abuja Light Rail. Yar’Adua-Jonathan stalled both projects for two years!’

However the Senator representing Bayelsa east not buying the Kaduna state governor’s statement challenged him to a public debate, saying that El-Rufai’s  dislike for the late Yar’adua may have beclouded his judgment.

The holy grail of democracy is the widespread participation of people in the business of power, legitimised by the representation of elected leaders. Participation is so meaningful that the noun derivative of democracy, democratisation, means "the action of making something accessible to everyone". So, on face value, the democratisation of "presidential aspiration" seems to be a good thing, and one may argue that this might throw up a pool of aspirants for the primaries for the people to choose, but the reality may be more sinister and a bad omen for our democracy.
